Dinendranath Tagore (1882-1935) Dinendranath,
son of Dwipendranath and grandson of Dwijendranath, was born in 1882
at Jorasanko, Calcutta. Dinendranath was an excellent singer and his
rich baritone, barely accompanied by any instrument, added a unique
dimension to Rabindra Sangit. Inspite of being a skilled and talented
musician, Dinendranath will always be remembered for the role he played
in preserving the melodies of Rabindranath's compositions. He could
replicate accurately every tune in the form of notations and even though
the composer forgot his own tune, Dinendranath would have noted it down
for future generations. He was equally adept at writing Western staff
notation. Dinendranath was the Principal of Sangit Bhavana from its
very inception. After a break of four years, 1923-27, he joined as Principal
again. Drama was another field he excelled in. He was an able director
of Rabindranath plays. He traveled with the Visva-Bharati drama unit
as Director on its tour to Bombay in November 1933 for the staging of
Taser Des. |
